Personally, I like to have one smelter making coke, one making iron, one making pig iron, and one making steel. Since smelters only cost a rock to make, there's no reason to not set up a few more to help things move along. The problem with a single smelter is that if you put these on repeat, a dwarf may try to move your pig iron or whatever to a stockpile, which means it's ineligible to be used for steelmaking, and that can throw a wrench in the whole thing. These steps need to be performed in order, otherwise you won't have the right materials.

Otherwise, drag them over as well as another dolomite. Next, you repeat the process but use an iron bar and pig iron bar.

Hopefully you left your iron and coke nearby, so the dwarf only needs to go out and find a piece of dolomite. It takes an iron bar, some dolomite, and two units of coke (one to burn, one to mix in with the molten iron). You also need to use coke, so hopefully that is still at the smelter. Iron ore tends to be pretty heavy, so it can take a while for your dwarf to drag it all the way to the furnace. Next, smelt your limonite/magnetite/hematite into iron, which will give you 4 bars. Each unit of bituminous coal of lignite will give you a handful of coke. For lignite or bituminous coal, you need to make coke at your smelter. I'm comparatively new and the wiki page is short, can someone please give me a few tips on getting a good metal industry going?įirst, you need fuel unless you have a magma smelter. I see fully equipped military on here all the time, conversations that reference what must be massive metal industries. I only have one smelter, is this the issue? Whenever I check (which isn't as often as it should be because I was distracted with trying to make a waterfall through my meeting room) the jobs are set to active, and the dwarves I see carrying resources to the smelter aren't moving very slowly, but production is still abysmal.

I love dolomite), but the dwarves never seem to produce anything. Is steel smelting a time consuming process? I produced 70ish coke from bituminous coal, but the smelting of actual metals seems to be an alien concept to the dwarves.Īll of the resources are there (it's a ridiculously good embark with surface iron and dolomite everywhere. It has produced a grand total of about 2 steel bars in that time. So, in the two (or three, I can't remember really) years that the grand fortress of Relicstandards has existed, it has gone from a dent in the hillside to a hole in the mountainside, from 7 dwarves to 78 and 23 nefarious parasites children.
